Juba University mourns death of professor, researcher Mudawi

Professor Mudawi who was an Associate Professor of statistics, Department of Statistics and Demographic at the School of Social and Economic Studies of University of Juba passed on in Juba on 2 July after battling cancer.

JUBA, JULY 15, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – The University of Juba is mourning the death of professor and senior researcher, Dr. Mohammed Hassan Mudawi who died last week.

Professor Mudawi who was an Associate Professor of statistics, Department of Statistics and Demographic at the School of Social and Economic Studies of University of Juba passed on in Juba on 2 July after battling cancer.

He was 73.

John Apurout Akec, Vice Chancellor of University of Juba eulogized late Dr. Mudawi as professional lecturer who worked tirelessly and contributed in field of Statistics.

“Prof. Mudawi was like a friend, a colleague and he was my leader and a good person to me,” Akec said during funeral function organized at the University of Juba on Thursday.

Dr. Adil Athanasio Surur, Undersecretary of Ministry of Higher Education said the University of Juba has lost more than 13 lecturers between 2022 and 2021 due to Covid-19.

“In 2022 and 2021, we have lost closely to 13 professors and associate professors, more than 13 epescially during period of Covid-19, their death will leave a big gap in the University,” Dr. Adil said.

Sarah Cleto Hassan, Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal and Alumni of University of Juba said South Sudan and Sudan have lost an eminent personality.

“Today, South Sudan and Sudan have lost one of their most eminent personalities and influence statistician. A sample person, humble and friendly,” said Cleto.

Prof. Abraham Kuol Nyuon, Dean of School of Social and Economic Studies said late Mudawi was leading figure in field of statistics will be dearly missed.

“We are here to honor the life and legacy of a distinguish professor and iconic figure and true deacon of knowledge,” Kuol said in a statement read by Julia Jadalla Jube, Deputy Dean.

Gum Marach Kuol, Student of School of Social and Economic Studies described Prof. Mudawi as father, mentor and teacher who contributed greatly in mentoring students.

“We are saddened by his death and it is leaving a very big gap in us and in the school and department of statistics. He is known as hospitable man whenever we visit him in his office or wherever we meet him,” said one of his students who recently graduated from the university.

Prof. Mudawi was born on 1st January 1950 in Darbar in Sudan.

He joined the University of Juba as teaching assistant in 1972.

He served as head of Department of Statistics and Demography, School of Social and Economic Studies, University of Juba.

He served between 2007 and 2012 as Director of the Computer Studies Center at University of Juba.

He was contracted as expatriate staff member in Department of Statistics and Demography, School of Social and Economic Studies at University of Juba for two terms from 2012-2016 and 2019-2023 respectively.

The late has contributed in many committees in University of Juba for developing curricula for both undergraduate and graduate levels especially with regards to statistics course.

Late Dr. Mudawi supervised more than 15 post graduate students.

He was also a member of Royal Statistics Society in London, UK and member of Indian Society for Statistic and Operation Research in India.

He did some research on demographic characteristics of Sudanese village, University of Khartoum, Sudan in 1975.
