JUBA — Former Kenyan Vice President and the East African country’s peace envoy to South Sudan Stephen Kalonzo is in South Sudan’s capital Juba to convey to Kiir President Uhuru Kenyatta’s apology over recent media remarks in which Peter Biar accused Kiir of being drunk during the funeral of former Kenyan leader Mwai Kibaki.

President Kiir last week traveled to Kenya to attend the funeral of President Mwai who had died a week earlier. But the South Sudanese head of state did not give speech by himself, but instead delegated cabinet minister Martin Elia Lomoru to speak on his behalf.

In his KTN news channel interview days after the funeral, Biar who is living in exile in the United States said Kiir failed to give speech by himself because he was ‘drunk’.

The remarks in the Kenyan media platform almost caused a diplomatic spat between the two countries with South Sudan foreign ministry summoning Kenyan ambassador to Juba and submitting a letter of protest to the Kenyan foreign ministry through South Sudan’s ambassador in Kenya.

The Kenyan media apologized and said it was taking measures to make sure that such mistakes do not repeat itself in the future.

In a statement this evening, the presidency said Kenyan peace envoy Kolonzo arrived in Juba and met Kiir this evening over the remarks.

“His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan has today (Wednesday, 11th May 2022), met in his Office with Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, the Special Envoy of Kenya to South Sudan,” the presidency statement reads in part.

“The Kenyan Special Envoy conveyed a message of gratitude from President Uhuru Kenyatta to President Salva Kiir Mayardit for attending the State Funeral service of the late  Former Kenyan President Emilio Mwai Kibaki, and The Envoy described it as of great national importance for Kenya,” it added.

It further said that “Stephan Kalonzo  expressed that H. E. President Uhuru Kenyatta is dismayed that some of the Media negatively portrayed the present of H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit at the State Funeral service, and expressed that atleast the Media House has issued an apology to H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the people of South Sudan for the unethical behaviour.”

“Stephan further explained that H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit is a President of a Sovereign Nation and he doesn’t represent himself but the people of South Sudan.

“Stephan Kalonzo said, H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit gave him assurance that what was done by the Kenya media cannot spoil  the relations between South Sudan and Kenya.

“They also discussed the progress of the implementation of South Sudan peace agreement and the political situation of Kenya.”
