JUBA, APRIL 7, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – A South Sudan prominent civil society activist is appealing to President Salva Kiir Mayardit to name a female foreign minister, saying the move would give a boost to women participation in governance as provided for ink the revitalized peace agreement.
Kiir last month removed Mayiik Ayii Deng as minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation without naming a replacement for him. He however assigned his deputy, Deng Dau, to serve on an interim basis until he appoints a replacement.
In a statement extended to Sudans Post this evening, Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) called on the president to name a female politician as the country’s foreign minister.
“CEPO is urging the presidency to appoint a female politician or official to the ministry of foreign affairs. Meaningful participation of women in the public life is paramount and it should not be undermine by the political leadership of country,” Yakani said.
The prominent and outspoken activist further appealed to the president to appoint female officials to lead key transitional period institutions such as the Political Parties’ Council (PPC), National Elections Commission (NEC), and Commission on Truth, Healing and National Reconciliation.
“We are also calling on the political leadership of the country to appoint female leaders to lead the political parties council and national elections commission or the commission for truth, healing and national reconciliation,” Yakani said.
“Appointing female leaders to lead number of independent commissions expected to be reconstitute soon,” he added.
