President Kiir two days ago traveled, along with a high-level delegation to the United Arab Emirates’ economic capital Dubai where he attended an event where the country celebrated South Sudan, among other countries.
Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, a senior government official who traveled with Kiir said the South Sudanese president has asked the government of the UAE to support the implementation of the revitalized peace deal.
He said Kiir asked the authorities to – in particular – to support his intentions to hold general elections in 2023, something which is being protested by the oppositions within, and some members of the internal community.
“He has asked the government in UAE to support the conduct of elections and the entire implementation process of the revitalized peace agreement which we signed with the opposition in 2018,” the opposition who requested not to be named, said.
According to the South Sudanese official, Kiir complained against some western countries that are demanding that he conduct elections while refusing that to be done unless under certain circumstances that he said are out of his reach to do.
“The president was very clear because some of our western friends are very contradictory. They want elections, but they want some certain criteria for conduct of electiosn and this is one of the issues raised by the president,” he added.
