Kiir behind SPLA-IO infighting, splits – protest organizer

JUBA – South Sudan’s People’s Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA) has said that President Salva Kiir Mayardit has been working to disintegrate the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) by sponsoring defections and splits.

In a statement extended to Sudans Post, the PCCA said the opposition defectors are then given weapons and ammunition by Kiir to cause internal fighting within the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

“While it has become customary to blame all the parties for any escalation, the truth is that President Kiir has, for the last three years, been working to cripple the SPLM-IO by sponsoring defections and splits. The defectors are then given weapons and financial resources to turn their guns against their own comrades,” the PCCA statement reads in part.

“Then the schemers would conveniently claim these sponsored sabotages to be internal clashes within the SPLN-IO. Thus, war has continued through proxies since 2018. The peace monitors would then oblige to buy the lamest of these excuses,” the statement added.

The powerful protest organizer asserted that recent renewal of conflict between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces and the SPLA-IO is a result of the president’s policies to destroy the SPLM-IO.

“The recent escalation is a cumulative result of such schemes. President Kiir has been behind all the efforts that have frustrated the implementation of the security arrangements and all other critical elements of the R-ARCSS. The SPLM-IO has on its part, been complacent in going along with these violations,” the group said.

In the same statement, the group called “upon all the people of South Sudan, to reject any return to war and to strongly condemn the latest military confrontations and drumming for war in the country.

“The people of South Sudan should demonstrate their rejection of war mongering and bloodletting by flooding the streets of Juba, Wau, Malakal, and all major population centers in protest of this slow but steady drifting of this country back to war.”
