JUBA — South Sudan government has directed state authorities of oil-rich Unity to deploy security officers in the state to arrest the suspected killers of Dr. Louis Edward.
On 21st May, Dr. Louis Edward, an employee of the International Rescue Committee was killed in Panyijar County in Unity State by unidentified gunmen who are still at large.
In a statement seen by Sudan Post issued on Monday, Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, South Sudan’s Cabinet Affairs Minister, directed the state authorities of oil-rich Unity State to continue investigating the incident and bring perpetrators of the crimes to book.
“The government of Unity State is directed to deploy all security organs in the area to arrest the lead culprit and cohorts, conduct a comprehensive investigation of the incident, and engage the civil prosecution in Unity State to assess the case and direct the same to the appropriate level of the court,” Elia said in a statement.
Lomuro described the killing of Dr. Edward as a human rights violation.
“It is worth mentioning that Dr. Louis is an employee of International Rescue Committee as of September 2019, and thus he is subject of protection by the Humanitarian Charter and Humanitarian Law since his death is undoubtedly a case of Human Rights Violation,” he disclosed.
He disclosed that the government will address complaints raised by health professionals regarding their welfare.
“The government undertakes to engage the Ministry of Health and concerned governance institutions to address the general complaints raised by Health Professionals Committee regarding the welfare of Health workers,” he said.
“The Executive of the Revitalized Government of National Unity shall bring the matter to the attention of the President for guidance and remain sized with matter till an amicable solution is established an institution for the vibrant, effective, and efficient health sector,” he added.
“We call on those charged with the responsibility of protecting health workers to exert relentlessly efforts to protect all health workers at all times across the country,” he explained.
