JUBA – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has dispatched his security chief, General Akol Koor Kuc, to neighboring Uganda in a secret visit aimed at bolstering security cooperation between the two countries, two sources at the presidency said.

“Yes it is true that General Akol Koor has travelled to Kampala today. But what is not true is that he was sent to sign a contract to buy Ukrainian warplanes. South Sudan do not have that capacity at the moment,” one official at the presidency said.

Another official at the presidency also confirmed the trip by the security chief, but said he was on a mission aimed at bolstering security cooperation between the two countries labeling the alleged procurement of warplanes as fake.

The director of Internal Security Bureau General Akol Koor travelled to Kampala, Uganda for a meeting with senior Ugandan security officials, and not to buy weapons. The claims that there is a contract to buy warplane is fake,” the official said.

The official further wondered why the country would buy such sophisticated weapons at a time of peace saying: “Why should we do that now when we didn’t during the seven years of the conflict in our country?”

“We have an economic issues and we cannot buy weapons now, for what?”
