BREAKING: Kiir dissolves National Assembly, Council of State ahead of new peace parliament

The announcement was read out on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Saturday evening.

JUBA – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has issued a Republic Order dissolving the Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the Council of States and is expected to form the long awaited peace parliament next week.

The announcement was read out on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Saturday evening.

SPLM-IO welcomes decision

Speaking to Sudans Post following the dissolution of the parliament, senior SPLM-IO member and close ally of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny, Dut Majokdit, said they welcome the decision and want an immediate formation of commissions and other peace mechanisms.

“We welcome the dissolution of the national assembly and the council of state,” the senior SPLM-IO official   said from the capital Juba.

“We therefore urge for the immediate formation of commissions and transitional institutions provided for in the revitalized peace agreement,” he added.
