JUBA, MARCH 13, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his first deputy and main rival Dr. Riek Machar on Monday met at the presidency in an attempt by visiting Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed to end the deadlock between the two men.

Kiir and Machar are currently in a deadlock over the sacking – by President Kiir – of the minister of defense and the subsequent transfer of the portfolio from the main armed opposition SPLM-IO under Machar to the ruling SPLM-IG under Kiir.

The two tried to meet on Friday but the meeting ended in “deadlock”, according to Machar’s office, and that the two men were planning for yet another meeting to discuss the contention presidential decrees.

In an apparent show of support for the implementation of South Sudan’s peace process, Ethiopian premier arrived in Juba on Monday morning in an unannounced trip to make an attempt to bring the two rivals together to avoid further bloodshed.

Sources now tells Sudans Post that the Ethiopian premier had asked Kiir to reconsider the transfer of the ministry of defense to his party and conduct consultations for future decisions.

“They have met and he asked the president not to conduct decrees without consultation other parties,” the source who did not want to be named told Sudans Post in Juba following the meeting, adding that “it was a very coldest meeting I have ever seen between them (Kiir and Machar).”
