JUBA – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday mourned the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Hafidh Ameir’s death was announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi.

Ameir died at 8am at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.

In his condolence message on Monday, Kiir conveyed his condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives, and friends, as well as the people of Tanzania following the death.

“It is with deep sorrow that I received the news of the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, this morning,” Kiir said.

He described Ameir’s death as a profound loss to President Samia, her family, and Tanzania.

“At this difficult time of grief, my thoughts are with Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, her family, and her loved ones,” he said.

Kiir said the government and people of South Sudan stood with the people of Tanzania during the period of mourning.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the people of the Republic of South Sudan, I convey my deepest condolences to President Suluhu, her family, and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania who are affected by his passing,” Kiir said.

The president said he wished the family “strength, courage, and solace” and prayed for the peaceful repose of Hafidh’s soul.

“The people of South Sudan stand in solidarity with their brothers and sisters in Tanzania and pray that God grants them the strength they need to cope with this dark moment in their country and within the region.”

The announcement brought an outpouring of condolences from Tanzania and across Africa as political leaders rallied around President Samia and her family.

Hafidh’s burial was scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Monday in Kizimkazi, South Unguja Region, Zanzibar, the family’s home area.
