JUBA — South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has this evening issued a Republican Decree reconstituting the Council of States.

In the decree read out on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), Kiir appointed 100 politicians representing various parties to the revitalized peace agreement.

According to the revitalized peace agreement for resolution of the conflict in South Sudan, the Council of States, shall be expanded from 50 members to 100 and members of various parties to the deal shall constitute the 100 lawmakers.

The reconstitution of the Council of State comes two months after the president reconstituted the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (R-TLNA) in which 550 officials were appointed into the national parliament representing other parties.

The Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGONU) had been running without a legitimate national legislature since the dissolution of the two houses in May this year.

In a separate decree, Kiir replaced some lawmakers from the National Assembly after disagreements emerged within the SPLM party after some elected lawmakers were left out of the new peace parliament.
