JUBA, MARCH 5, 2023 (SUDANS POST) — President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday night issued a presidential decree reinstating embattled speaker of Jonglei state parliament, Amer Ateny Alier, three months after she was dismissed.
The presidential decree read out on the state-own South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) did not give reasons as to why she was removed or reinstated.
Amer who is also the head of SPLM-IO in Jonglei state was fired by Kiir in January under unclear circumstances, sparking outcry from the SPLM-IO which accused Kiir of “blatant” violation of the revitalized peace agreement.
KIIR-MACHAR DIFFERENCES “RESOLVED”
The reinstatement of Amer comes just hours after a closed-door meeting between President Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar Teny who is also the leader of the main armed opposition SPLM-IO.
According to presidential affairs minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin, the meeting on resolved differences between Kiir and Machar.
“….the meeting resolved challenges and outstanding issues of concern,” Marial said, adding that the two men have agreed to urgently meet when issues arise to resolve them.
