JUBA – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel from his role as first deputy secretary general of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in what is seen as a potential move to promote him to the vacant position of first deputy chairman of the party.
The first deputy chairman role became vacant after the dismissal of James Wani Igga.
Mel had been appointed Vice President for Economic Cluster on Monday, a move that sparked speculation that Kiir was preparing the business mogul-turned-politician to succeed him as president.
Kiir announced the latest changes in a series of decrees broadcast on the state-run South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation Thursday evening.
Kuong Danhier Gatluak was appointed as the new first deputy secretary general of the party, replacing Mel. Gatluak had previously served as the party’s secretary for defense.
Bol Makueng Yol was named secretary for political affairs and mobilization, taking over from Santo Malek Anai, who was dismissed.
The changes come amid ongoing speculation that Kiir is planning to hand over power to Mel, who has gained increasing influence within the SPLM in recent years.
Kiir is also facing criticism over Monday’s reshuffle, particularly the demotion of his longtime ally, Igga, from first deputy chairman of the SPLM to secretary general.
