JUBA – South Sudan’s Salva Kiir Mayardit on Thursday night issued a number of republican decrees removing the governor of Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil Anthony, and the deputy governor of Western Equatoria State, Kennedy Gaaniko.

The decree, broadcasted on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), did not cite a reason for Adil and Gaaniko’s dismissals.

Gen. Wani previously served as governor of the now-defunct Jubek State and as the national deputy Interior minister.

He graduated from Wadi Seidna Military College in 1983 and served in the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) until 1992, when he joined the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA).

Wani was a key figure in South Sudan’s liberation struggle, commanding various units and playing a significant role in capturing Yei from the SAF in 1997.

The president then appointed Elia Richard to replace Gaaniko as the new deputy governor of the restive Western Equatoria State.
