JUBA, MARCH 3, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday night dismissed the defense and interior ministers.
Angelina Teny, the defense minister on the ticket of the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), and Mahmoud Solomon, the interior minister from the SPLM-IG, were sacked in a presidential decree on state television.
The decrees were read on South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) and did not cite any reason behind the president’s decision. He did not immediately name replacement for the two senior government officials.
Teny who is also the wife of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny and chairperson of SPLM-IO National Committee for Security and Defense was appointed to the position in March 2020.
Mahmoud Solomon Agook was appointed in 2021 to replace Paul Mayom Akec.
Kiir in a separate decree readout on the state-own broadcaster also swapped the ministries. The defense was allocated to the SPLM-IO by an arrangement provided for in the revitalized peace agreement.
The interior was allocated to the SPLM-IG. Now the defense ministry will go to the SPLM-IG and the interior portfolio will be given to the SPLM-IO.
There was no immediate reaction from the SPLM-IO.
I am worried only of any misunderstanding that may arise among the rival parties’ leaders. Otherwise if those changes are made with mutual consent that may not create a chance for misunderstanding again in this semi -peaceful situation in the country.
