JUBA — South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit dismissed two cabinet ministers on Wednesday, removing Gabriel Changson Lew Chang as Minister of Higher Education and Madut Biar Yel as Minister of Transport, according to a presidential decree broadcast on state television.

Veteran opposition figure Lam Akol Ajawin, leader of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) and secretary-general of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), was appointed as the new Minister of Transport.

Madut Biar was reassigned to the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology, replacing Changson.

In a separate decree, Kiir appointed Gregory Deng Kuac as undersecretary in the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, replacing Kuol Deng Kuol.

Gregory Deng Kuac previously served as Deputy Director General of the General Intelligence Bureau of the National Security Service, a post from which he was dismissed last year.

The position has remained vacant since.
