JUBA, AUGUST 14, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday signed the 2023-2024 national fiscal budget into law, three days after the parliament passed the budget amid opposition protest.

The bill was present to the office of the president  by speaker of parliament Jemma Nunu Kumba today

In statements to journalists following the signing of the budget by the president, Kumba said the country’s finance minister will, in a five-months’ time, present a supplementary budget for the increment of civil servants’ salaries.

The 2.1 trillion budget was passed on Friday with a 400 percent increment in salaries and wages for civil servants, the army and other organized forces.

The main armed opposition group SPLM-IO protested the budget presented by the finance minister, demanding an immediate 600 percent salary increase. The budget was passed despite their absence.

The budget also includes funding for infrastructure development, education, and healthcare.
