JUBA- South Sudan presidency on Sunday said it will impose a state of emergency in Tonj to contain the inter-communal conflict in the area.

This new development was revealed by Ateny Wek Ateny, Press Secretary in the office of the President, during a  two-day peace conference aimed at bringing harmony among the communities of Tonj of Warrap State  at Freedom Hall in Juba yesterday.

The two-day conference attended by more than 5, 000 people will see the community of Toni discuss ways of restoring peace in the restive area.

The conference was called after deadly years of cattle raiding, and communal violence among the communities in the area which left hundreds dead and wounded several others.

Ateny said a state of emergency in Tonj will be imposed because of the unending circle of communal violence and the unfolding humanitarian situation that is attached to it.

“In order for Aleu Ayieny to succeed, a state of emergency will be declared. It is the state of emergency that will show people that the work has started,” Ateny said.

The presidential aide further urged the people of Tonj to work together  in restoring peace  and stability in their area after years of inter-communal conflict.

“You are brothers, and I want you to work together as brothers in restoring peace to Tonj so that everyone can live happily, and move freely,” he said.

In August 2020, more than 130 people were killed in Tonj East County after soldiers clashed with civilians during a disagreement in a local market.
