President Kiir made the plea during a meeting with Hemedti in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, where he attended the extraordinary summit of the IGAD Heads of State and Government, and the Non-Aligned Movement summit.
The president emphasized the immediate need for a cessation of hostilities in Sudan, urging Hemedti to engage in dialogue for an amicable resolution to the crisis.
President Kiir also reiterated his government’s commitment to supporting the role played by the regional bloc IGAD in bringing an end to the devastating conflict, responsible for displacing approximately 7 million people and claiming thousands of lives.
Furthermore, President Kiir called for the swift opening of humanitarian corridors to ensure essential services reach the Sudanese population.
Despite accusations against the RSF, South Sudan officially maintains a neutral stance, not aligning with any of the conflicting parties, even though some of its citizens participate as mercenaries alongside the RSF.
Last week, South Sudan accused the RSF of supporting and arming rebels along the border with Unity State.
Sudan has been embroiled in a deadly conflict since April 2023, stemming from disagreements between the regular army and the RSF over the latter’s integration.
The conflict escalated in Khartoum on April 15, with RSF launching attacks on army and government positions, leading to the seizure of key installations.
Despite international calls for dialogue, both parties continue to trade blame, portraying an apparent unwillingness to embrace peace.
The discord centers on the integration process timeline, with the army favoring an expedited approach, while the RSF advocates for a lengthier 10-year process.
The situation remains complex, posing significant challenges to the pursuit of a peaceful resolution.
