JUBA — South Sudan presidency’s senior photographer Maal Maker Thiong has been dismissed by President Salva Kiir’s Press Secretary Ateny Wek Ateny after allegedly charging Central Bank governor, Duer Tong Ngor, for pictures he had with President Salva Kiir in 2019.
In letter addressed to Maker, Ateny also said he had warned the former radio journalists for practices that he are not welcomed in the presidency including charging the governor for pictures he had with President Kiir and also remitting unedited photos of the president with a Sudanese female singer which later appeared on social media resulting in a criticism.
“I am writing to inform you that your secondment in the Press Unit as Senior Photographer has been terminated, effective from today April 19, 2021,” the later dated April 19, and signed by Ateny reads in part.
The letter said “the decision to terminate your secondment was done after careful consideration to some of your unauthorized activities.”
“You may vividly recall that, on January 10th 2019, you received a final warning for the reason that could have ended your employment with the Office of the President as billing the Governor of Central Bank to pay for the pictures he had with the President amounted to gross misconduct.
“However, on pleading for pardon, I gave you another chance to improve yourself- pending your right to continue as Senior Photographer in the Press Unit.
“On September 2020 during the meeting of the President with the Sudanese Artist Ms. Nadaa Al Ghalaa (whatever the spelling), who came to pay a curtesy call to the President when she took part in the Sudanese Peace Initiative in Juba, you took pictures of the President with the said Artist and handed the pictures to her without editing them professionally and the pictures through the Musician’s Facebook Wall, went viral on social media.
“And as a result, we received too much criticism which we were unable to provide any reasonable defense;
“On the same note, we received confidential reports from the department concern about your other unauthorized activities and I have once verbally informed you about these confidential reports and asked you to exercise maximum caution to no avail- hence my decision to the effect.
“Finally, for the above reasons Senior Photographer within the Press Unit where you were in charge of the day to day photography of the President, you are asked to report to the Directorate of Communications and Public Relations in the Office of the President.
“You will remain within the Office of the President as Senior Cameraman in the Department of Communication and Public Relations until further notice.
“Notwithstanding the above reasons, you are instructed to handover all Cameras and the accessories as well as any other property entrusted to you in the course of your having carefully considered your continuation as a senior photographer.”
