JUBA – A South Sudanese activist has been angered by the arbitrary arrest of a woman protestor who called on President Salva Kiir Mayardit to resign from power, with the activist saying the South Sudanese president’s days in power are numbered.
Renk County Commissioner Dok Ghot Ngor said the woman identified as Fadhia Ngor was arrested 13 days ago after participating in protests in which demonstrators asked the government to deliver services and to force local organizations to provide clean drinking water.
In a brief social media statement, the activist referred to President Salva Kiir’s government as ‘dictatorial’ and ‘brutal’ regime saying the arrest of the woman over her call for the president to step down is a violation of the transitional constitution which guarantees freedom of expression.
“President Kiir brutal and dictatorial regime has again arbitrarily arrested a peaceful woman protestor in Renk chanting ‘Down down Kiir’. Our Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of speech and association. Arresting innocent citizens for expressing their anger and dissatisfaction is an act of cowardice,” he said.
He said President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s days in power are numbered urging the authorities to release the woman adding that the activists’ call for President Salva Kiir Mayardit to leave power won’t stopped until when the president arrest all the citizens.
“President Kiir government days are numbered, it will reach to a point where you’ve to arrest all of us. Remember, the Tunisian revolution was started by one individual and the next day government was removed. President Kiir government is playing with fire,” he said.
“Release the woman immediately and unconditionally including all those illegally detained for demanding your government to step-down,” he added.
