Kiir’s office says reconstituted parliament to be formed by February 15

This comes a day after the presidency said a meeting between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his first deputy Dr. Riek Machar Teny ended with an agreement to allow Machar to visit his forces in a trip that will also include unnamed vice-presidents.

JUBA – South Sudan presidency announced on Wednesday that the Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the Council of States will be formed within two weeks’ time and would be ready before or on February 15, according to a statement seen by Sudans Post.

This comes a day after the presidency said a meeting between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his first deputy Dr. Riek Machar Teny ended with an agreement to allow Machar to visit his forces in a trip that will also include unnamed vice-presidents.

The meeting also resolved to complete the formation of states governments as well as the local governments raising hopes for the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement that has seen setbacks since the start of the pre-transitional period in late 2018.

In a statement this afternoon, Presidential Affairs Minister Nhial Deng Nhial, said the presidency agreed during the Tuesday meeting to complete the formation of the reconstituted branch of legislature within the period before or on February 15.

“Further to the Press Statement issued on the outcome of the meeting of the Presidency that was held on Tuesday February 2, 2021, the Ministry of Presidential Affairs hereby wishes to declare that the said meeting also resolved that the (R-TGoNU) shall finalize the reconstitution of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the Council of States on or before February 15 ,2021,” the statement seen by Sudans Post said.
