JUBA, MAY 8, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan’s ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM-IG) led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit will take away the position of Jonglei State governor after coming to an agreement with South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), the presidency said today.

In a statement seen by Sudans Post, the presidency said the agreement between the SPLM-IG and SSOA was reached during a meeting between President Kiir, the leader of the SPLM-IG, and minister of higher education Changson Lew Chang who is also the leader of SSOA at the state house on Monday.

“[South Sudan Opposition Alliance] has agreed to swap Jonglei State Governorship with SPLM. SSOA will now take the position of the Deputy Governor,” the presidency statement seen by Sudans Post reads in part.

The statement said that the “decision was reached after President Kiir tasked the leadership of SSOA to find an option to address the simmering governance crisis in Jonglei State.”

In statements to the media, Changson said they agreed  to the swapping “for the sake of restoring peace and a functional administration in Jonglei State.”

The statement further said that SSOA will be compensated with a national ministerial position, a presidential envoy and deputy governor of Jonglei.
