JUBA – The South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) fined Koryom FC, a club based in Bor, Jonglei State, 10 million South Sudanese Pounds on Monday after its supporters protested weekend killings during a match.
During Sunday’s match against Kator FC in the South Sudan Premier League (SSPL) tournament, Koryom FC supporters displayed signs condemning the January 31 killings in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria State, where over 40 people were killed in an attack on cattle herders. The SSFA said its organizing committee found Koryom FC and its supporters in violation of the association’s regulations on disciplinary conduct.
“…therefore the (organising) committee resolved that a fine of 10,000,000 SSP is imposed on Kopryon FC for destructions caused by its supporters in the east stands at Juba National Stadium,” the SSFA said in a statement circulated on Tuesday.
The football body also issued a strong warning to the club, banning supporters from attending the team’s next two games.
“Koryom FC and its supporters are hereby issued a strong warning regarding their conduct during the march. Any repetition of un-sportsmanship like behaviour or security breaches will result in suspension of Koryom from the ongoing competition,” it warned.
“Koryom FC is mandated to play its next two matches without the presence of its supporters. This measure aims to ensure the safety and integrity of the competition,” the statement added.
Sudans Post’s attempts to reach Koryom FC officials for comment were unsuccessful.
However, a source close to the club management, who declined to be named, said supporters had already raised the 10 million pound fine and were waiting to pay the South Sudan Football Association.
