JUBA, AUGUST 14, 2023 (SUDANS POST) –  South Sudan’s parliament speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba, has lifted the suspension of lawmaker Juol Nhomngek of the main armed opposition group, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO).

In a letter dated August 10, 2023, Kumba ordered the suspension of Nhomngek to be lifted and directed the Clerk and House Administration to carry out the order immediately.

“In accordance with regulation 56 (4) of the TNLA, Conduct of Business Regulation 2011 (Amended 2021), I, Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, do hereby lift the Suspension of Order dated April 26, 2023, of Hon. Juol Nhomngek Daniel, effective from the date of signature of this Order,” the order reads in part.

Nhomngek was suspended from the country’s transitional parliament on April 26, 2023, for allegedly refusing to cooperate with an investigation committee formed to investigate him on defamation allegations against Kumba.

Nhomngek was accused of making controversial statements linking the speaker to misappropriation of funds in his social media post. He denied the allegations and said he was talking on fundamental issues in parliament.

When contacted by Sudans Post, Nhomngek confirmed receiving a letter from the parliament’s clerk informing him of the latest development on his case and expressed happiness that he will finally return to do his work.

“This afternoon I received a call from the clerk of the parliament that the suspension has been lifted and I welcome it because that is a good step to make sure that we go back and do the work in the parliament,” he said.
