In his New Year’s message, the governor emphasized that agriculture is crucial for the state’s stability, stating that hunger can fuel conflict.
He promised security for farmers and encouraged them to cultivate food for both consumption and sale.
“There is nothing that will sustain us except agriculture,” Rin said.
“Go out to the villages and start clearances this time to establish farms. The production of 2024 to be the seeds of 2025. I want you people to farm for what they will eat and sell the surplus. Do it yourself, and your government will provide security for you,” he said.
Rin acknowledged that hunger could lead to social unrest and violence.
“I am always happy when I see people walking in the streets of town happy because they have something to eat,” he said.
The governor stated that peace dialogues have been initiated with neighboring counties in Warrap State and Rumbek North to facilitate peaceful resettlement.
He also confirmed that a cholera outbreak in three counties in greater Yirol has resulted in 3-4 deaths.
He urged the public to practice proper hygiene, including regular handwashing and drinking clean water, to prevent further infections.
