Themed “Strengthening the Local Government Administration on Capacity for Service Delivery,” the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to improving governance, according to Kaman Makuenyar, chairperson of the specialized committee for local government, peace, and security in the Lakes State transitional assembly.
“We appreciate the support from UNDP for initiating this important training,” Makuenyar said, highlighting the crucial role administrators play in implementing policies and ensuring the rule of law reaches local communities.
UNDP Resident Representative Dominic Sam emphasized the program’s significance in fostering development and peace. “This is a key intervention of our mission,” he said, commending the Lakes State government’s dedication to empowering local structures.
Sam pointed out that local administrators are the backbone of the civil service, acting as the first point of contact for citizens.
“You play a crucial role in delivering services, fostering development, and maintaining internal peace and security,” he stated.
The training program will equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge in public administration, financial management, conflict resolution, and community engagement.
UNDP highlighted the program’s aim to enhance capacity for service delivery with integrity, transparency, and accountability.
Lakes State Minister of Local Government Chol Kuotwel Manhom underscored the importance of the training, particularly for administrators working in complex environments at the grassroots level.
“They need the capacity to deal with these challenges,” Manhom said.
Manhom emphasized the link between good governance and trained administrators, stating, “Good governance cannot happen if there are no trained practitioners.”
He expressed gratitude to UNDP for its support, highlighting its potential for long-term impact.
The training program will be performance-based, with evaluations influencing assignments and promotions.
