JUBA – South Sudan’s main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by First Vice President Riek Machar Teny said on Tuesday that Maban county commissioner Peter Alberto Maben is under investigation for mismanagement of funds.

Alberto defected to the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit yesterday just hours after he was suspended by the SPLM-IO-appointed governor of Upper Nile State James Odhok Oyay.

His suspension followed complaints from local communities about alleged misconduct and failed leadership.

Puok Both Baluang, Acting Press Secretary in the Office of the First Vice President, explained in a statement that Maben’s decision to leave the SPLM-IO coincided with his abandonment of his responsibilities in Maban County.

Baluang said Maben defected to escape an investigation into alleged mismanagement and malpractices that had occurred in Maban County.

“Following the demonstrations that took place on September 10, 2024, in Bunj, Maban County, which called for Mr. Maben’s immediate removal from office amid allegations of mismanagement and malpractices that have adversely affected the residents of Maban County,” Baluang

“In light of these troubling allegations and in pursuit of a transparent investigation, Mr. Maben was suspended on September 23, 2024. This suspension is aimed at ensuring a smooth and fair inquiry into the events that have transpired,” he added.

He said Maben left for Juba without obtaining the necessary permissions from the state government, disregarding the protocols that govern such actions.

“The investigation committee is moving forward to thoroughly assess the situation and present their findings to the public,” Baluang said.

“Transparency and accountability are paramount in addressing the issues facing Maban County, and it is our firm belief that justice must prevail,” he added.

He added that the party would continue to monitor the situation closely, remaining committed to upholding the principles of good governance and the rule of law in the country.
