JUBA – Opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny has dissolved the 21 federal opposition states just less the 24 hours before he and President Salva Kiir Mayardit could form the long-waited Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU).
Machar and Kiir agreed during a meeting at the state house J1 on Thursday to form the unity government. Kiir told reporters that he will appoint Machar on Friday and the two would form the unity government on Saturday.
Last week, Kiir agreed to return the country to the original ten states revoking the controversial 32 states which have been described by the opposition – including Machar’s SPLM-IO – as a violation of a 2015 peace agreement.
“As we agreed with the president, South Sudan has reverted to ten states, the 21 states are hereby dissolved with effect from 22nd February 2020,” Machar said in the order directed to all opposition governors of the 21 federal states.
