Following disagreements over who should lead the SPLM into elections due for 2015, Kiir and Machar led the country into a deadly ethnic violence that has killed at least half a million people and displaced millions into IDP and refugee camps.
The war was largely fought along ethnic line with Dinka members of the country’s army, then SPLA, supported Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, while Nuer elements of the SPLA supported Machar, an ethnic Nuer.
The two men signed a peace agreement in late 2015, but then returned to war following a deadly fighting at the presidential palace in the country’s capital Juba.
A revitalized version of that agreement was signed in September 2018 providing for the current transitional government of national unity which has been internationally criticized for lacking will to advance the peace deal.
Speaking during the Christmas Day at St. Teresa Cathedral in Juba, Kiir said he has forgiven Machar who he said has been fighting him since 1991, and asked the SPLM-IO leader to apologize to the people of South Sudan.
“I want to tell you today that I have forgiven Dr. Riek Machar who has been fighting me since 1991. It will be up to him to apologize to the nation or he doesn’t, but I have forgiven him,” he said.
‘NOTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR’
Reacting to the statements of the president, SPLM-IO member of National Liberation Council (NLC) and Chairperson of Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) for Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Dut Majokdit said Machar has done nothing wrong to apologize to anyone, saying it is president Kiir who was the chair of the SPLM who should apologize because the SPLM he led had taken the country to war.
“There is nothing he can apologize for and there is nothing personal in that conflict. When the war broke out in December 2013, it was a failure of the SPLM as a party to democratize itself and Dr. Riek and Pagan Amum Okiech were doing their best to reform the party. But he (Kiir) refused to make the reform and that is what led us to the civil war,” told Sudans Post in Cairo.
“So, if there is anyone to apologize, it would be President Salva Kiir himself and not Dr. Riek Machar because he was the chairman of the SPLM party which led the country to war. What he said that he forgiven Dr. Riek is not bad because there is need for reconciliation, but it is him who should apologize to the people of this country,” he added.

Since 2013 to 2016 Salva,was a one continued the power struggle not to allow the free and affairs elections to the people’s of South Sudan as the others countries does displaced the populations to become refugees because he plan to be winning again as a president. I never dreams one a day for the people’s of South Sudan to have and affair and free elections like others countries does he himself knowing that went the all populations was stayed into their residents places nobody can be voting from hime. That was the reason why drive South Sudan, become fighting by themselves anybody have a knowledge and experience about these such a wars happening
Salva his one who drive country to wars because he adopted the African dictatorship nothing can blaiming and use to Saying that Dr. Machar was apologies that was not really to true .
He himself it can apologies because he killed innocent civilians because he would stay to the leadership forever.

Salva Kiir is the one to apologize for taking county back to deadly civil war that killed half of a million. Hence the blood the deceased should be upon Salva and his cohort.
well president kiir him self nothing to apologize for reik machar ,and what he did 2013 to kill inncented civilian from nuer . wel machar is one case problem with mament of spla/splm with lam akol 1991 that DR garang can;t cupluter juba .he kill people of bor too .but it up to him weather he will to salva .any way kiir is weak that why DR machar can;t make for him .soon we will got taugh leader which beat machar .late just keep doing that .but also kiir why he apologize for DR machar for no reason ,just do your job untill end of your leadershipe .thank you
i really don’t see any point there and am not a politician but to My best of acknowledged is that the person who as for forgiveness is the problem because if you know that you are free from problem you should not just rush to forgiveness so he knows what he have done ✅ to his people that is why he is asking for forgiveness but not to claim to some people who are innocent in that country south Sudan sincerely les speak the truth because the suffering that they made to our people is not their families people sleep 💤 hungry and they are enjoying but there’s a time really for everything
Who says Dr. Riek Machar doesn’t deserve to tender an apologetically to the public discourse on behalf of South Sudanese citizens who have been long suffering since the inception of post-civil war in between the united Sudan Country.
Why not is hard for the SPLM-OI chairman, Dr. Riek Machar for apologize to the citizens of South Sudan for taking back into out war in 2013, whereas Dr. Riek Machar is still the same element who let us down in 1991, especially when he formed the split moment known as Nasir Faction Army opposition during the SPLM/A post-civil war with oppressor Khartoum’s regime led by the then (NIF)known as National Islamic Front which had once united with Dr. Riek Machar and fought hardly against the SPLM/A led moment under the late founder father C-in-C, Dr. John Garang De Mabior, whom Dr. Riek Machar who didn’t either bother himself to tender his apologetic to Dr. John Garang De Mabior until his untimely death took place suddenly on the boarding helicopter plane crash which flew him from Entebbe Airport, Uganda to South Sudan and Kenya’s borders in 2005.
Therefore, Dr. Riek Machar is the criminal who needs to be brought into justice for the longest sufferings of South Sudanese people; likewise, what if he will get into leadership by an accident, then wouldn’t he still have no chance either to apologetic for the tragedy loss of innocent people’s souls in vain through his tribal petty political agenda. Dr, Riek Machar must tender apologetic to South Sudan Country’s H.E President, Salva Kiir Mayardit and the entire South Sudanese citizens who have been continually suffered through Dr. Riek Machar’s political army violence.
I don’t understand why savla kiir make apologize to the criminal DR machar but guy is not care about apologize to for the mistake he make in 1991 to killed innocent people of Dinka bor .so the guy looking more problem to fight back again .he feel hopefully that some one can back him up for more death people of nure community .so the we I looked at it he doesn’t care about apologize. but he thinks about to go back to the war .but savla kiir supposed to killed him other way around .and he fear by international community to threatening him for removing to the power.but it can,t happen to take him out to the power the country to mess more deaths
I don’t know why young people are still blind who should be blamed! To be honest, African states are created by God with ethnicity do we blame God why He created us in different regions and diversities, does it wrong? Why young people are still supporting cultures ideology not reality? If me personally want to be president does it sin? Why all African presidents want to stays in until the death do you think is right? If we blame President Kirr do not blame him as a Nuer or Dinka blame him with the good reasons, the Dr. Riek. Furthermore, the one should be blamed is President, presidency is not a kingdom which will include any person, this crisis has been brought by SPLA /M lead president Kirr, and is the only one who should eccept apologize to South Sudanese citizens, and to eccept the mistakes the country has choice to forgive him, don’t be polish be wise and educated.

Dear South Sudanese citizen, I can see now you’re throwing the booms to yourself in which you’re innocence for this tragic war. For your information as citizen of this beloved country don’t defend or focus on your tribal men weakness rather to thing forward to change and develop this country for better future of your children. The way i looked at the topic of apology, Who can apology between head of the family and the family when any incident happen? I presume you know the answer is Kir to apology since he know everything and have responsibility of everything.
Dr. Riek Machar was the one who brought back Salva Kir when he was defeated by late Dr John Garang from Bar el gazel region. If he hate Salva why would he brought him back the SPLM? I believe now if we can raise up again the late Dr John Garang, Kir himself would have to run back to either bush or his state. You Dinka Bar el gazel we all knew what are doing and you want to drive our country to.
Go back to history of the country its upper Nile people who fought and stand firm to liberate this beloved country especially Nuer and Dinka Bor. You Bar el gaze people are late joiner for this movement.
Moreover, don’t mislead the country while you don’t even know where it come from.
Salva shall be judge one and brought to court and his cohort.
While apology is important for healing and reconciliation, it’s additionally important to be realistic about who to apologize and for what purposes. Apparently, we all know how the war started in 2013, what worsened and what led it to an ethnic line. If you explore these two you will find that it not Dr. Riak to apologize but the SPLM leadership.
