JUBA – South Sudan’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny has this afternoon meet the governor of the country’s Lakes state Makur Kulang who discussed with him ongoing efforts to peacefully disarms civilians in the state.
According to the office of the First Vice President, the Lakes state governor asked Machar for a peace conference to be conducted between the people of Panyijiar County in Unity state and Yirol in Lakes state to address communal issues triggering cross border conflict.
“Wednesday 2nd June 2021 – Hon. Makur Kulang, Governor of Lakes State briefed H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, the First Vice President regarding the general situation of the State,” the statement seen by Sudans Post reads in part.
According to the statement, the Lakes governor said he “discussed with H.E. Dr. Machar about the peacefull disarmament of the civil population and communities reconciliation in Lakes State.”
Makur also “asked for a peace conference to be conducted to bring together the communities of Payinjiar and Yirol in Unity and Lakes States respectively, to dailogue for peacefull co-existence,” according to the statement.
According to the statement, Machar also “commended him in the peaceful disarmament exercise took place in the state.”
It further added that the governor said the first Vice President “pledged to support his efforts to stop communal conflict and to ensure that the security is maintained across Lakes State and its neighboring states.”
“H.E. Dr. Machar urges Governor Makur to cooperate with his state government and work together to ensure peace and stability achieved in Lakes State,” the statement adds.
