JUBA – South Sudan’s First Vice President and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny has on Monday met the country’s minister of interior Paul Mayom Akech and Unity state governor Joseph Nguen Manytuil to discuss circumstances on the death of the IRC doctor who was killed in late May in Southern Unity state’s Panyinjiar County.
Dr. Louis Edward was killed on May 24, 2021 by criminals who up to now remain at large. Yesterday, South Sudan’s cabinet minister Martin Elia Lomoro issued a statement directing the government of Unity state to apprehend the culprits.
In a statement this afternoon, the office of the First Vice President said Machar was briefed by the minister of interior and the governor of Unity state on government efforts to apprehends the criminals and informed him also to provide advice to further their efforts in arresting and investigating the criminals.
“His Excellency Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, the First Vice President has received yesterday 14th June 2021, in his office, Hon. Paul Mayom Akech, the Minister of Interior and Hon. Dr. Joseph Nguen Monytuil, Governor of Unity State,” Machar’s office said in the statement seen by Sudans Post.
“The meeting discussed the circumstances surrounding the death of Dr. Luis Edward in Panyinjiar County, Unity State on 24th May 2021,” the statement clarified, before quoting the minister of interior as saying “the meeting was convened on [my] request to seek assistance and guidance from H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, the First Vice President and Chairman of the SPLM (IO) in order to devise ways to unveil the facts surrounding the deaths of Dr. Luis Edward.”
“Hon. Mayom added, H.E. Dr. Machar advised him on how to proceed on this matter. Also assured him that there’s efforts has been taken to investigate the incident in order to achieve justice and to ensure that all NGOs resume their work peacefully to provide services to the people of Panyinjiar.”
