“Friday 18th June 2021 – the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon met today in his office with R-JMEC Interim Chairperson Gen. (RTD) Charles Tai Gituai,” the statement by the office of the First Vice President who is also the leader of the opposition SPLM-IO, said.
The brief social media statement said “The meeting discussed the status of the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), its progress, challenges and the way forward.”
This comes hours before the Amnesty International’s secretary-general wrote to President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Machar in a strong-worded open letter appealing for accountability for victims of war crimes during the last seven years of conflict.
“Only a holistic process that caters to the diversity of victims and their multiple needs and desires, that guarantees non-recurrence of the violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, and addresses a range of human rights including the right to truth, right to reparation and the right to justice can bring an end to violations in South Sudan,” Amnesty International’s Secretary-General, Agnès Callamard, wrote today.
“Ensure the implementation of all other transitional justice provisions of the peace agreement, including those related to the Commission on Truth Reconciliation and Healing (CTRH), the Compensation and Reparation Authority (CRA) and reform of the security sector,” the letter added.
