JUBA – South Sudan’s First Vice President and leader of the main armed opposition group, SPLM/SPLA-IO, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, on Thursday called for the establishment of strong government institutions to help in the implementation of the 2018 peace deal.

Speaking during the opening of a workshop on Peace Building Framework in Juba on Thursday, Machar said the institutions established to implement the peace deal has an important role in the transformation of South Sudan into peaceful country.

“We have to ensure all institutions established to implement the peace agreement, each institution has a role to contribute to peace-building, there are institutions established,” Dr. Machar said.

Dr. Machar said that the failure of any institution to contribute to peace-building will hamper the peace process.

“Failure of any one of them to contribute to peace-building will affect the process of peace implementation,” he said.

“The president has to go through the agreement, listing all institutions that are established by this peace agreement and have a check of which institutions have not been budgeted for,” he added.

He stressed the need to allocate a budget for newly created institutions to help in peace implementation.

“Failure to budget for them will be a failure to deliver peace dividends that are needed by people and even to curtail the peace,” he added.

Stephen Par Kuol, the Minister for Peace-building said his Ministry has been carrying out peace retreats to create harmony among people in the country,

“We have been doing peace retreats to create harmony among people in the states. We are made aware that it is not the leadership of peace-building alone to implement the agreement and bring peace, we want it to be a collaborative exercise involving all government institutions concerned and partners,” Par said.
