JUBA – South Sudan’s First Vice President Riek Machar, leader of the main opposition group SPLM-IO, has called for dialogue between parties to discuss the timeline for elections and possible revisions to the country’s peace roadmap.

In a letter addressed to the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC) on Monday, Machar stressed the need for dialogue to ensure “a credible, inclusive and violence-free poll.”

“I would like to welcome and express our support for the proposal that the peace parties to the Agreement dialogue on these issues to chart a way forward for peaceful elections and transition to democracy,” Machar said.

He emphasized that talks were necessary to address challenges hindering the implementation of critical tasks needed for free and fair elections.

“In light of the challenges registered during the five years of implementation, we would like to state that dialogue and its outcome shall only be credible in the presence of the mediator,” he said.

“In addition, there is a critical need to demonstrate political will on the side of the parties and resolution of critical issues that have been affecting the implementation of the agreement,” he added.
