JUBA — South Sudan’s information minister and government spokesman Michael Makuei Lueth has said that the people of South Sudan do not want further adjournments of the elections slated for 2023, according to his office.
In a statement, Makuei said he supports calls by President Salva Kiir Mayardit for conduct of elections slated for end of transitional period which is just less than a year away.
“I am in support of the President of the Republic of Salva Kiir Mayardit’s decision to hold an election by the end of the current transitional period. However, political will is required from the parties signatories to the 2018 peace deal,” Makuei’s office said.
“People of South Sudan are tired of adjournment. The people of South Sudan should exercise their democratic rights through the ballot box,” he added.
The South Sudanese senior government official has been accusing the SPLA-IO and other signatory parties to the agreement of intentionally hampering full implementation of the peace agreement for having only “a force of generals” with no troops to command.
The SPLM-IO under First Vice President Machar has refuted this claim and has instead accused Kiir’s group of undermining the implementation of the revitalised peace deal.
