On Monday, unidentified gunmen attacked vehicles travelling to Juba along the Nimule-Juba highway resulting in the killing of at least five people including two catholic nuns. No group among South Sudan’s warring parties has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack which has been condemned by the government.
Since yesterday, there have been social media speculations that the Malong-led group was behind the attack, but an opposition spokesman allied to Malong denied in a statement that the group is behind the attack and condemned “the sub-sequential unwanted attacks on South Sudanese peoples along Juba- Nimule highway and to the Catholic Diocese of Juba in particular and that of religious personalities.”
But when contacted by Sudans Post, an opposition source close to Malong who said he was not allowed to speak to the media over the matter confirmed that the group was behind the attack and the purpose was to cut off Juba from supplying states of Uganda and Kenya and that it was accidental that the ambush resulted in the killing of innocent civilians.
“The purpose of launching the operations in Equatoria region is to cut off the major roads Network connecting Juba with Uganda and Kenya but not to target the innocent civilians. When this Juba- Nimule lifeline road Network is cut off, there will be no more supplies to Juba,” the officer said from Nairobi, Kenya.
The source accused President Salva Kiir and his army chief General Santino Deng Wol of working against the ongoing talks in the Italian capital Rome and alleged that troops had been brought to Central Equatoria region from different parts of the country for confrontation with the rebel group.
“This move comes when we realize that Kiir is not ready for peace because he has been busy with his chief, General Santino Deng Wuol recruiting youth into the army across the country. The NSS has been busy too arresting civil rights activists in Juba Salva Kiir is not ready for peace in the first place and that is why he is threatening to withdraw from the Rome peace initiative,” he said.
“It’s his choice now as to whether to accept peace or not. If President Kiir is preparing for war, why not us? No one is more ready than us to face him and his government. Since March when SSUF/A structure its military wing, the organisation is ready to confront the government anytime if Rome peace talks failed,” he said.
The source further accused President Salva Kiir of being a criminal who is not for the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
“If he were not a criminal, then he could implement some parts of 2018 Khartoum peace agreement between Juba and SPLM-IO, especially the security arrangements. Let the international community be aware that its president Kiir that is prolonging the suffering of our people. It is painfully apparent that without justice for all there can be no peace,” he said.
