JUBA — A senior opposition official of the holdout opposition SSOMA is telling Sudans Post that one of the reasons South Sudan United Front led by General Pul Malong Awan was suspended from SSOMA last year is because he didn’t want to open a front in Bahr el Ghazal region coupling with communication with President Salva Kiir.
Malong’s group was suspended in September 2020 after being accused by some members of SSOMA of communicating with President Salva Kiir in an apparent attempt to sabotage opposition standing at then peace talks in the Italian capital Rome.
Malong latter issued a counter-statement and condemned the decision suspending him and declared it null and void before Real-SPLM leader Pagan Amum could side with him resulting in his suspension as well.
Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, a senior opposition source allied to Cirilo claimed that one of the reasons for the suspension of the former army chief was that Malong wanted to focus the war around Juba of Central Equatoria state refusing to open a front with the government in Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
“Malong was in communication with [President] Salva Kiir but there has been a suspicious issue with him since the formation of the SSOMA. He wanted to focus the war around Juba and Central Equatoria state. He didn’t want to open a front in Northern Bahr el Ghazal and he was asked to explain and the explanation he gave was not enough to convince [the leadership of SSOMA],” the official said on condition of anonymity.
“When the issue of talking to Salva was discovered, SSOMA said enough is enough and were done with him,” the official added.
“Not to kill innocent people”
Contacted by Sudans Post, the official spokesman of South Sudan United Front, Chol Duang, said the holdout group didn’t want to fight the government anywhere because they don’t want innocent of innocent people whom he said have nothing to do with the war against President Salva Kiir’s government.
“We know when and where to shoot a gun, but not to kill innocent people who’re also suffering under Kiir’s rule,” he said. “Again, no one can tell us what to do in SSOMA. The only people we recognize in SSOMA are Gen. Paul Malong Awan, Gen. Pa’gan Amum Okiech and Gen. Thomas Cirillo, other briefcase groups in there should do the needful.”
“Truth be told, SSUF/A and R-SPLM are the true SSOMA now. Anybody else purporting to be speaking from the position of ownership is daydreaming.
“Again, when SSOMA was formed it wasn’t about killing of poor and innocent people on highways; it was about peace talks with the so-called regime in Juba. For us in SSUF/A, our revolution is for the people of South Sudan and against Kiir and his parasitic friends in Juba.
