JUBA – South Sudan’s former army chief General Paul Malong who is leading an armed rebellion against the government of President Salva Kiir has not returned to Juba, according to an aide close to him.

Some social media activists have claimed that Malong who leads the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) has returned to Juba this morning allegedly upon an invitation by President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

In a statement, the press secretary for the opposition leader, Chol Duang, denied the claims saying Malong, who was once a close ally of Kiir, cannot return to Juba until a peace process that is ongoing in Italy is concluded.

“There are reports circulating on social media and some news outlets indicating that our Chairman, General Paul Malong, has left to Juba. I would like to make it clear here that the reports are not true and should be ignored,” Duang said in a statement extended to Sudans Post.

“General Malong can only return home at his convenient time and when some specific terms and conditions have been met. Therefore, we urge South Sudanese to disregard these speculations of his return, and treat them with the contempt they deserve,” the statement added.

It said that “When the time comes for our chairman to return home, we will communicate to you officially.”
