RUMBEK – A 28-year-old man in South Sudan’s Lakes State is recovering in hospital after injuring himself by cutting off his penis.

Lakes State police spokesperson Major Elijah Mabor Makuac said the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Akuac residential area of Rumbek town, the state capital.

“According to information, it was revealed that the man was sick and was having a mental problem previously,” Major Makuac said. “But currently, he recovered, and to surprise yesterday. He just decided to cut off his penis which is an attempted suicide. So, he was evacuated to Rumbek State hospital where he is admitted and receiving treatment currently. But, is recovering well,” he said. “He is okay.”

Dr. Teran Madit Teran, medical director of Rumbek State Hospital, confirmed the incident.

“I rush to see what happening, but to get surprise. There is a young of around 28 years old that has a very strength kind of trauma of which he cuts his manhood meaning his penis and there was a serious active bleeding,” Dr. Teran said. “When I saw my concerns was just to stop the bleeding in the first place because he bleed alot, considering the distance and the duration of when this thing happened.”

Dr. Teran said the man had lost significant blood and required a blood transfusion.

“So, I worked on him. I rest the bleeding, and than he transfused with one unit of blood because he was almost collapsing because of serious homoerotic secondary to that trauma,” he said. “I didn’t actually bothered to ask the family about that story. But the single story I got from them is that the guy has some mental issues.”

Dr. Teran said the man had severed nearly two-thirds of his penis.

“He cuts it, he was bleeding for a quiet along time for 2-3 hours and that one alone if he had delayed for another one hour, he would have died because of serious cut and bleeding that happened to him,” he said.

The man, identified as Marial Mayom, attributed the act to his inability to find a romantic partner.

“I cut my penis because I feel like no girl loves me,” he said. “I have been trying to engage girls, but no dare to love me.”

“Like it is January I can start from here up to end of the year, without a girl who can accept me to get love and the other new year comes I will do the same following girls to get love and it’s failed.”

“And that’s from year in and year out without getting a girl to love me in Rumbek,” he said. “At around 2 to 3 PM I decided to cut off the penis because it’s meaningless to me.”
