AWEIL – A 60-year-old man is being held in prison in Aweil East County of South Sudan’s Northern Bahr El Gazal state, for stabbing three cows to death.
The suspect, whose name has been withheld by the police authorities admitted to the crime but pleaded for release, claiming he could not afford to pay restitution.
According to local officials, the incident occurred in Daang village in Madhol payam. The suspect, who was apprehended and brought to the Madhol payam prison, stated that he was not in his right mind when he committed the act.
“The cows I stabbed belong to my own relative, and I don’t have the means to pay back,” he said. “I was simply fishing in the swamp.”
The prison director, Captain Anei Aliai, expressed confusion over the suspect’s motive, noting that the cows did not graze on his farm’s crops but were in the swamps.
Aliai suggested that a family feud may have contributed to the incident, causing the suspect to act impulsively.
He said that the local chiefs had initially handled the case at the grassroots level, but the suspect would now be sent to the county judge for further legal proceedings.
The prison director warned residents to avoid actions that could lead to communal violence, especially in the face of existing challenges.
