KUAJOK – A man in Akon, Gogrial West County, Warrap State, set his home ablaze during a fight with his wife on Monday night, according to the state’s Civil Defense department.

This incident comes amid a growing number of fires attributed to domestic violence and negligence.

Madut Malek, Director for Safety and Disaster Management, reported over 145 fire incidents since the beginning of the year. He cited domestic disputes as a leading cause, along with carelessness in handling fire.

“These issues are pertinent to correct as a lot of domestic feuds are being turned around by men by burning down the grass-thatched houses when they are out of the mood,” Malek stated.

Malek also noted that carelessness, such as leaving fires unattended, often leads to destructive blazes.

He highlighted recent tragedies, including a fire in Tonj South County that resulted in the deaths of three women and a man. Across Warrap State, over 515 households and 100 cows have been lost to fires.

Malek urged the public to be mindful of fire dangers, avoid leaving children unsupervised around open flames, and dispose of flammable materials responsibly.
