AWEIL – A tragic accident on Monday claimed the lives of two South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) soldiers and critically injured four others in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
The incident occurred when an SSPDF vehicle transporting personnel from Marial-baii payam in Aweil West County to Gok-Machar in Aweil North County overturned on Monday.
Local traffic police have attributed the accident to over speeding.
Speaking to Sudans Post on Wednesday, traffic police officer Anei Dut Awan confirmed the deaths of Garang Mawien and Mou Dut Garang but did not identify the four injured soldiers who he said have been rushed to Nyamlel for treatment.
“The SSPDF vehicle was traveling to Gok-Machar when it overturned on the spot,” stated Awan. “It is unfortunate that the two officers died immediately, and the four seriously injured soldiers have been transferred to Aweil.”
Awan urged the public to prioritize safety by avoiding excessive speed while driving.
Nyamlel hospital medics confirmed their efforts to treat the injured soldiers.
Deputy director Lual Khamis Lual acknowledged in a phone call with Sudans Post the possibility of transferring the critically injured patients to Aweil referral hospital if their conditions deteriorate.
Over speeding remains a leading cause of accidents in South Sudan, according to traffic police reports.
