WASHINGTON – The Kingdom of Morocco has become the latest Arab country to normalize relations with Israel, US President Donald Trump announces, just less than two months after Sudan announced normalization of ties with the Jewish state.

“Another HISTORIC breakthrough today!” the US president announced in a tweet. “Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to full diplomatic relations – a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East!”

The deal brokered by Trump’s Administration makes Morocco the fourth Arab country to set aside hostilities with Israel in less than four months. Since August this year, four Arab nations, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan, agreed to normalization with Israel in return for some benefits.

In the case of Morocco and as part of the deal, U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, where there has been a decades-old territorial dispute with Morocco pitted against the Algeria-backed Polisario Front.

Under the deal, Morocco will establish full diplomatic relations and resume official contacts with Israel, grant over-flights and also direct flights to and from Israel for all Israelis.
