AWEIL – Police authorities in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have arrested a mother for investigation after her daughter committed suicide, reportedly following a dispute over a U.N. food ration card.

Marial Awou, Deputy Director of Police at Malek-alel headquarters, told Sudans Post on Tuesday that the daughter took her own life after her mother allegedly seized a food ration card issued by the World Food Programme (WFP).

“A 65-year-old mother is being held in custody for investigation after her daughter took her life following a quarrel over the WFP food ration,” Awou said.

Awou explained that the argument arose after the mother took approximately 1.5 kilograms of food meant for the daughter.

“She lost some portion of about 1.5 kilograms, which angered her daughter. She then sneaked into a nearby bush and killed herself,” he said.

The police are interrogating the mother, and authorities plan to charge her after concluding their investigation.

Awou urged the public to avoid such extreme actions, emphasizing the importance of seeking help during difficult situations.

“The public should refrain from committing suicide. They should seek counseling or advice from neighbors or community members when facing problems instead of resorting to suicide,” he said.

He added that economic hardship is driving people to make desperate decisions.
