AWEIL— The police in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are conducting a search for a mother who allegedly attempted to kill her child in Aweil West County.
A 30-year-old woman escaped the scene on Friday in Maduany payam, Aweil West County, after allegedly attempting to kill her 5-year-old son, who was rescued by a neighbor.
John Garang Mou, the uncle of the minor, told Sudans Post on Saturday the child’s mother, identified as Akon Tong Akol, attempted to hang the child with a rope before a neighbor intervened and rescued the child.
“What happened in Maduany is something surprising; a woman named Akon Tong Akol tried to hang the child, and the neighbors saved him,” Garang said.
Garang stated that the motive for the attempted murder of the child is still unclear.
“The child has been rushed to Aweil Civil Hospital, where he is being treated, and the mother is still at large,” Garang said.
He stated that the incident, which is unprecedented, has caused shock among the residents in the area.
Garang stated that some individuals who have spoken to the woman mentioned she received calls from an unknown person who may have prompted her to act this way.
He stated that attempts are being made to ensure that the suspect is held accountable.
“Some individuals are looking for her to understand the motives behind the homicide, while others suggest that sorcery or supernatural beliefs may have influenced her actions.”
John Mou, the uncle of the rescued child, urged the local youth to continue searching for the child’s mother and to refrain from ridiculing her in order to understand the reasons behind her actions.
Analysts attribute such behaviors to the trauma and distress caused by economic hardships, as some family heads do not demonstrate true responsibilities at home.
Elders and authorities encouraged local residents to maintain restraint and resilience despite the challenging circumstances they face.
