JUBA – The Internal Security Bureau of South Sudan’s National Security Service (NSS) on Tuesday arrested two men – one Liberian and one South Sudanese – in connection with circulation of counterfeit U.S dollars, according to a spokesman of the security institution.
David John Kumuri, Director of Public Relation at National Security Service, told journalists at the National Security headquarters in Juba this afternoon that the two suspects were also caught red-handed in possession of machines for counterfeiting money.
“We would like to inform the general public that the National Security Internal Security Bureau as part of its constitutional mandate of combating crimes against the state has apprehended two suspected criminals in different operations by the Internal Security Bureau,(ISB),” he said.
“The two suspects were respectively apprehended in possession of machines for counterfeiting United States dollars as well as fakes dollars amounting to one million, eight hundred and eighty thousand U.S dollars,” he added.
Kumuri warned people against counterfeiting money and injecting them into the market.
“Today with the arrest of these suspects, we have taken major step as Internal Security Bureau to disrupt criminals network or business demented to our national economic and this case would send a very serious message that we will still be able to identify the perpetrators at large no matter wherever they hide,” he said.
Kumuri reiterated the Internal Security Bureau commitment to cut off the flow of fake dollars into the market.
“The ISB is determined to cut off the flow of fake dollars into the market and we will significantly work to bring to an end these illegal monetary transactions,” he warned.
The two suspects are identified as Joseph William Deng, a South Sudanese nation who was arrested in possession of fake three hundred and eighty thousand (380,000) United States dollars, and Daniel Brown Nema, a Liberian national who was in possession of the counterfeit machine and fake one million and five thousand United State dollars (1,005, 000).
According to South Sudan Penal code Act 2008, section 153, counterfeiting coins, notes and 158 of the law possessing instruments or materials for purpose of counterfeiting coins or notes are national security crimes and both are punishable by the law not exceeding 7 years and if the suspect is being found guilty may also be liable for fines.
