Governor Gai briefed Minister Akol on an overview of the situation in the state, highlighting the severe impact on communities in Fangak, Ayod, and Pigi, which are affected by the environmental disasters.
“The humanitarian situation across Jonglei State is dire, particularly in areas severely affected by flooding and displacement. Our communities in Fangak, Ayod, and Pigi are facing immense suffering,” said Gai.
The governor applauded the minister’s proactive response, noting the critical importance of planned relief efforts, especially for the vulnerable returnees in Fangak who are in pressing need of food, shelter, and vital medical aid.
“We are particularly concerned for our returnees, who, after resettling from Nasir, face significant challenges in securing even the most basic necessities like food, shelter, and medical support,” said the governor.
Mr. Akol commended the strong partnership between his Ministry and the state government, reaffirming the ministry’s unwavering dedication to providing effective humanitarian aid across all nine counties of Jonglei.
The minister was also briefed on recent, unsettling incidents in Nasir, which have triggered further displacement, exacerbating an already fragile situation in Jonglei state. In response, he pledged coordinated support, including the rapid deployment of essential supplies and crucial health interventions, to those affected by these new displacements.
“Jonglei State, due to its strategic yet vulnerable location along the Nile, continues to be one of the region’s most severely affected by climate change,” Atak stated.
“Working closely alongside our valued partners and in tight collaboration with local authorities, we are absolutely committed to reducing the vulnerabilities caused by relentless flooding and the dangerous outbreaks of diseases such as cholera,” Atak added.
The minister acknowledged support provided by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), recognizing their vital role in the response to the crisis in Jonglei State and other parts of South Sudan.
