AWEIL – A vocal critic of former Northern Bahr el Ghazal state governor Tong Akeen Ngor has been appointed deputy commissioner for the state’s Revenue Authority.
Samuel Garang Dut, known for his activism and outspoken criticism of Ngor, faced legal troubles in 2021 after accusing the former governor of corruption. Found guilty of defamation, he served a six-month prison sentence.
However, newly appointed Governor Simon Uber Mawut has now brought Garang into the government fold, appointing him to the key financial role.
The move has raised eyebrows in the state, given the history of animosity between the two men.
Garang has expressed gratitude for the appointment, pledging to work collaboratively with the governor and the revenue authority’s commissioner to improve service delivery.
“Thanks to the governor of NBGs/ Aweil H.E Simon Ubeer Mawut for appointing me as deputy commissioner of SRA for admin & finance for Northern Bhar el Ghazal State/ Aweil,” he said.
The appointment comes as the state government seeks to bolster its revenue collection efforts and address financial challenges.
Garang’s past experiences as an activist could potentially bring a fresh perspective to the role, though questions remain about how his appointment will impact the political landscape in the state.
