AWEL – Northern Bahr el Ghazal state’s ministry of animal resources launched a livestock vaccination campaign on Monday to curb the spread of anthrax, following animal deaths reported at the start of the rainy season.
Speaking to Sudans Post today in Aweil, the director-general of the state ministry the ministry said teams are being deployed across counties to vaccinate cows, goats and sheep against infectious diseases, particularly anthrax.
“We’re sending out teams to vaccinate cows against infectious diseases like anthrax,” Uguak told Reuters. “Cattle owners need to be aware and bring their cows for vaccination.”
The campaign follows reports of animal deaths since the rainy season began, Uguak said.
The ministry is partnering with organizations like Veterinarians Sans Frontières (VSF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to obtain injectable vaccines.
Uguak urged the public to take advantage of the free or low-cost opportunity.
Anthrax is a serious bacterial disease that primarily affects herbivores like sheep and cattle. It causes skin or lung lesions and is often fatal.
